Mannai Rajagopalasamy Government Arts College, Mannargudi, Thiruvarur District was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 1971. Since then, the College has been enormously catering to the needs of youth who represent the economically weak peasants and underprivileged agricultural families of Mannargudi region and has been fulfilling their higher educational pursuit.
The college has a sylvan campus of forty acres and two hundred and twenty six square feet which was provided by Mannai Rajagopalaswamy Temple, a Vishnavite Shrine situated in the heart of the town. The college, which was earlier affiliated to the University of Madras, was affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, Trichirappalli in the academic year 1982-83. Only 3 Under Graduate Programmes were offered by the college at the time of its inauguration.
However, at present it has been offering a total of 11 Under Graduate Programmes, 9 Post Graduate Programmes along with 5 M.Phil. and 8 Ph.D. programmes on various disciplines. Though, the goals and objectives of the college are those of the policies of the Government of Tamil Nadu making higher education accessible to more students of backward and depressed classes and thereby to make them informed participants in the nation building activity, the M.R. Government Arts College has its own unique vision and mission in its academic objectives. In this context, the College has been striving for excellence in academic and research activities consistently through its valuable efforts. Accordingly, besides the academic research programmes (M.Phil. & Ph.D.), the members of staff have been taking up research projects funded by central as well as state Government funding agencies.
As recognition of its multifaceted efforts in student teaching and coaching as well as at its involvement in research activities, the Government of Tamil Nadu has elevated the college from a ‘B’ grade to ‘A’ grade college. The exclusive facilities developed in the campus include soft skill centre, digital library, INFLIBNET access, WiFi and BSNL internet connections etc. for both students and staff. In the academic year 2014 - 15, the Institution has been reaccredited with Grade ‘B’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Very recently, the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) - a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) of the Central Government has recognized the College as an eligible state higher educational institution and has sanctioned Rupees Two Crores for the development of various infra structure facilities of the Institution.
